[21/10 11:49 pm] Susie Ms:
But mr perumal how can u say yoga overcomes it? I mean haze contains hazardous particles in it. And now its at unhealthy levels. N yoga involves alot of inhaling. Dont get me wrong im just very curious. I wana join d classes but im worried at d same time as well. Datz why im asking.

[22/10 9:04 am] Perumal Veeran:

Do you remember the Kapalabhati (Cleansing Breath) which you have learnt in the Beginners Course? When you keep doing the Kapalabhati about 100 rounds each time and about 2 or 3 times every day, the lungs are kept clean and unaffected by environmental pollution.

Normally, we inhale a lot of dirt, bacteria, petrol fumes and many other contaminants together with the air that we breathe. During the haze, we also inhale a lot of soot. If we don't do anything about it, all these contaminants get mixed with the phlegm and gets lodged in the lungs. Thus, they get firmly stuck to the alveoli sacs, thus reducing the breathing capacity of the lungs, and also the gas exchange capacity between the alveoli and the blood capillaries.

This gives rise to respiratory diseases such as bronchitis, asthma, pneumonia, tuberculosis etc, which in turn causes various other diseases, thus affecting the whole body.

But, Yoga has solutions to all problems of mankind.

In Hatha Yoga, you are recommended to practise breathing exercises such as Kapalabhati, Bastrika Pranayama etc. These exercises are so powerful that the phlegm will be loosened up and get dislodged from the alveoli. Then the phlegm will be pushed up and expelled from the lungs and out of the body. So, with regular practice, we can purify our lungs and keep it clean at all times.

This is especially so during the haze. We cannot do anything about the haze. It is not in our hands. We also cannot always stay in the house. We have to go to work. Those of us who are working indoors; not so bad. But, those of us who are working outdoors; what are we going to do? It is our job. Life has to go on. So, what is the solution?

This is where we turn to Yoga for help. We practise the breathing exercises regularly, so that we don't allow the soot and the dirt to get lodged in the lungs. We don't wait for the haze to affect us, and then only start the breathing. No! We should keep practising the breathing exercises regularly in order to develop a strong defense mechanism of our body, so that we don't give the haze a chance to affect us.

Thus, Yoga teaches us how to remain unpolluted while living in the midst of a polluted environment.

I hope the above explanation will be of some help to enable you to make the right decisions.

Thank you.
